Algeria cancels soccer match due to Israeli manager

Algeria’s soccer team have pulled out of a friendly match with Ghana only because the latter has an Israeli head coach.

The Algerian team dropped out of the match to ensure that Avram Grant did not enter the country.

“The Algerian national team cancelled the friendly match with Ghana because it refused to host Ghana’s Israeli coach, Avraham (sic) Grant,” Algerian journalist Ayman Gada confirmed on Facebook.

Grant, the former Chelsea manager, has been in Ghana for the past two years. He had been the coach of the Israeli national team from 2002 to 2006.

Algeria last played Ghana in 2015’s Africa Cup of Nations, when Grant’s team won 1-0.

Algeria has long been a supporter of the Palestinian cause. The country used to have more than 100,000 Jews, but the vast majority of them left after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 and during the country’s bloody war of independence against France.

Algeria has a mixed attitude toward Jews. In 2014 the country announced it would reopen synagogues that had been closed since the 1990s. However in 2015 Algerian Islamists called for attacks on Jews and later that year a video surfaced of Algerian troops marching to chants about murdering Jews.

Algeria came fourth on a list of the world’s most anti-Semitic countries.

Recalling the pogrom against Iraqi Jews on the evening of mass terror attack in Tel Aviv

This Wednesday evening, four people have died following a mass terrorist shooting in the centre of Tel Aviv.

Up to six others have been injured in the attack, which took place at a popular open-air food market.

A police commander said two Palestinian gunmen from the West Bank were behind the “harsh terror attack”, and both were “neutralised” at the scene.

Local reports suggest one of the gunmen had been disguised as an ultra-Orthodox Jew.

One of the alleged attackers was arrested, and a doctor has told Sky News that the other suspect is in a stable condition after being taken to hospital for treatment.

Only the bravery of security guards at the market managed to avert a bigger disaster by stopping the attackers from going inside.

This news came in as we were preparing an article recalling the 75 years since the Farhud, the two-day pogrom that befell the Jews of Baghdad, in June 1941.

When the Farhud—which means, in Arabic, “violent dispossession”—erupted, there were around 90,000 Jews still living in the Iraqi capital, the main component of a vibrant community descended from the sages who, 27 centuries earlier, had made the land once known as Babylon the intellectual and spiritual center of Judaism.

A monument in Ramat Gan, Israel, serves as a memorial for the Iraqi Jews killed during the Farhud (Arabic for ‘violent dispossession’) in June 1941.
A monument in Ramat Gan, Israel, serves as a memorial for the Iraqi Jews killed during the Farhud (Arabic for ‘violent dispossession’) in June 1941.

By the time the violent mob stood down, at the end of the festival of Shavuot, nearly 200 Jews lay dead, with hundreds more wounded, raped, and beaten. Hundreds of homes and businesses were burned to the ground.

As the smoke cleared over a scene more familiar in countries like Russia, Poland, and Germany, the Jewish community came to the realization that it had no future in Iraq. Within a decade, almost the entire community had been chased out, joining a total of 850,000 Jews from elsewhere in the Arab world summarily dispossessed from their homes and livelihoods.

AntiSemitismWatch comment: The poignancy of yet another unprovoked terrorist attack on Jews, 75 years on from the Farhud, should be clear to all. If you want to do something, pray for all those affected by tonight’s outrage, share the story of the Farhud and stay strong.

Lionel Messi accused of being “Jewish” and a “Zionist” for donating boots to charity

839164d1430944276-lionel-messi-lionellMessi, who plays for the Barcelona Football Club, was interviewed last week on the Egyptian television program “Yes, I Am Famous” on the private network MBC Masr.

“One of the things he does is give charity all over the world, and these will be among the donations he gives,” Egyptian host Mona El-Sharkawy said as the soccer star held a pair of red, black and white cleats up to the camera. “And he gave these to our program because we will have an auction for them. Messi, thank you very very much.”

Shoes are considered an insult in Arab and Egyptian culture, in part because they are lowly and dirty and literally touch the ground.

Said Hasasein, a member of the Egyptian parliament and also a talk-show host, ripped Messi on the air.

“Whose shoes do you want to sell, Messi? How much do you think it will get? You don’t know that the nail of a baby Egyptian is worth more than your shoes? Keep your shoes to yourself or sell them to Israel,” he said.

Hasasein then took off his shoes and said: “This is my shoe. I donate it to Argentina. This is an insult to Egyptian people.”

Egyptian Football Federation spokesman Azmi Mogahed phoned in to the show to also criticize Messi.

“Even in our religion …,” he began to say when Hasasein reportedly interrupted to say “His religion is Jewish!”

Mogahed agreed, saying: “I know he’s Jewish, he donates to Israel and visited the Wailing Wall and whatever … we don’t need his shoe and Egypt’s poor don’t need help from someone with Jewish or Zionist citizenship.”

Messi is a Catholic and has made the sign of the cross on his chest after scoring goals. In August 2013, he visited the Western Wall on a peace tour with the Barcelona club. One year later Messi supported a soccer match organized by Pope Francis to promote peace between Israelis and Palestinians, but he did not play in the match due to an injury.

An Egyptian soccer player, Ahmed “Mido” Hossam, posted on Twitter: “The most precious thing the writer owns is his pen and the most precious thing the footballer owns is his shoes. I hope we stop these false accusations.”

Joyous Aliyah news turns sour

A Jewish man has been jailed in Yemen after being accused of helping smuggle an 800-year-old Torah scroll out of the country into Israel this week.

As well as an Orthodox Jew, a Muslim airport worker is also believed to have been arrested and accused of deliberately letting a rabbi from the community pass through security with the historical artefact – which Yemeni lawmakers consider to be the property of the country.

The man is believed to have been arrested after local authorities saw widely circulated images of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reading the Torah scroll with Yemen-born Rabbi Dahari, who made aliyah along with 16 other members of the dwindling community in a covert operation this week.

Israeli-American businessman Moti Kahana, who is best known for having orchestrated the rescue of the last Jews of Aleppo last year, said religious leaders were concerned that the Jewish man is being tortured in prison.

Mr Kahana, who set up New York-based NGO Amaliah, which cares for hundreds of Jewish historical artefacts from Syria – including an 800-year-old siddur, added: “When I saw the scroll in the media I knew the Yemenite government would complain – they would say that international law was broken.”

Jewish Agency spokesman Avi Mayer said he could not confirm whether a Jewish man was currently being detained in Yemen.

On the Torah scroll, he said: “The ancient Torah scroll brought from Yemen to Israel this week is the property of the Raydah Jewish community, of Yemenite Jewry, and of the Jewish people.

“The rabbi of Raydah, who came to Israel this week along with the last remaining members of his community, brought the Torah with him and has been proudly and openly sharing this cherished part of his community’s rich religious heritage. The Jewish community of Raydah has thus come to an end.

“The notion that the Torah should have been left, without protection, in a country torn apart by a violent civil war involving several parties that are viciously hostile to Jews, is preposterous. The Torah is part of the proud heritage of Yemenite Jewry and that heritage will live on in the state of Israel.”

Turkish official fired after wishing death on Israelis hurt in bombing

An official from Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party has reportedly been fired after saying she hoped Israeli tourists injured in Saturday’s deadly suicide bombing in Istanbul had died.

Irem Atkas sent her ill-wishes over Twitter shortly after a bomb was detonated in central Istanbul, killing three Israelis and wounding 11 others, according to Turkish officials.

“I wish that the wounded Israeli tourists were dead,” Aktas, a board member in the women’s branch of the party in the Istanbul neighborhood of Eyup tweeted shortly after the attack.

Her account was removed from social media site not long thereafter.

Aktas was reportedly dismissed from her duties immediately afterwards.

Five people in total were killed and another 36 injured after the suicide bomber struck Istiklal Caddesi, a pedestrian thoroughfare on the European side of Istanbul that is usually thronged with shoppers and strollers but was still relatively quiet when the bomber struck around 11:00 a.m. local time.

The fourth person was an Iranian national and the fifth was the suicide bomber, according to Turkish daily Hurriyet.

Israeli officials only confirmed one national was killed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed the Foreign Ministry to contact the Turkish Foreign Ministry and demand an official apology.

Aykan Erdemir, a former Turkish MP and columnist, captured an image of Aktas’s tweet before it was removed. He later tweeted that her hurtful comment was not representative of other Turkish politicians:

According to English-language paper Daily Sabah, Hatice Yücel, chairman of the Women’s Branch of the party’s Eyup district, said that the district organization was taking the necessary steps to discharge Aktas and her views as shared on social media did not reflect the party’s views.

Yücel expressed her condolences to the victims and wished for a quick recovery for the wounded.

Turkish Newspaper: Darwin was a Jew and monkeys evolved from Jews!

A column in the radical Islamist Turkish daily Vahdet claimed that the evolutionary theory of “the Jew” Darwin contradicts Allah’s word in the Koran and that in actual fact, monkeys evolved from perverted Jews whom Allah cursed and punished, MEMRI reported.

The article, written by Seyfi Sahin, a journalist who supports the ruling Islamist AKP party and claims to be a physician, argues that Jews “terrorize the world of science” and, as a Jew, Darwin concocted his theory of evolution in order to turn Muslims away from their religion.

“The aim of [Darwin’s] theory is to turn the non-Jews away from their religion, to harm their faith, and to make them suspicious about their religion. Darwin, being a Jew, believed, lived, and was buried according to his religion. His real targets were the Muslims,” writes Sahin.

Sahin explains that the chromosomal anomalies between monkeys and humans prove “that humans are not derived from monkeys, but that monkeys come from humans. There are many factors in the creation of such anomalies, among them divine, environmental, and chemical.”

Sahin quotes four Koranic passages as evidence that monkeys are derived from Jews, including the verse “Whomever Allah has cursed and punished, and those he turned into monkeys, pigs, and Satan worshipers, occupy the worst place [in his eyes], and they are perverts that have deviated from their path.”

He asserts that Jewish control over the “world’s financial and scientific institutions is so powerful that they terrorize the world of science” and have successfully brainwashed even experts into believing Darwin’s “deception as scientific reality.”

“I believe that the gorillas and chimps living today in the forests of North Africa are cursed Jews. They are perverted humans that have mutated,” Sahin contends.

He adds that since Muslims do not have the same control over the media, banks, and scientific institutions as Jews do, they have not been able to “scream this truth.”

“But we have our intellect, we have our faith, and we have our Allah. Alhamdullillah [with the grace of Allah],” Sahin concludes.

As we approach International Holocaust Memorial Day it is worthy to reflect on the work of the one bastion of hope that all Jewish communities should expect to rely on. The United Nations, born out of peaceful intent at the end of World War II, should rightly be considered a shining and protective light at this time of concern and anxiety for Jews brought about by the rising tide of anti-Semitism. It is then so dreadfully tragic that this lumbering monolith simply isn’t there for us.

Un-flag-squareAfter the horrors that were manifested by man during the Second World War you would imagine that a mantra of vigilance against anti-Semitism would run through the UN like a golden thred.  Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth.

Relying on half a trillion dollars from “Daddy” – the US – the UN over the past 70 years has morphed into a bloated, greedy, arrogant mega-bureaucracy that has spawned a plethora of ugly offspring, such as the vile UNHRC or the repulsive UN Durban Conferences on Racism which, instead of promoting peace, deliberately foment hatred.

From 2006, when the UN Human Rights Council was formed, to 2015, it passed zero condemnations of al-Qa’ida, Islamic Jihad, Hamas, Hezbollah, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan or Egypt – but passed 61 condemnations of Israel.

Israel is the only nation in the world that has a standing agenda item against it at every session of the UNHRC. Not North Korea, not China, not Pakistan, not Syria, not Sudan, not Iran. The council has never once even mentioned the word “Hamas”.

Professor Anne Bayefsky, of Canada’s York University, writing of the UN human rights system, explains: “It is the tool of those who would make Israel the archetypal human rights violator in the world today. It is a breeding ground for anti-Semitism. It is a sanctuary for moral relativists. In short, it is a scandal.”

It is also the case that non-democratic states overwhelmingly control the UN. They often mouth the words of moderation, but defend nations that give sanctuary to terrorists.

Ludicrously, the three UN Durban Conferences on Racism have found racism exists in only one of the 192 nations of the UN: Israel.

Выступление Михаила Горбачева на сессии Генеральной ассамблеи ООНThen there us the notorious UN Resolution 3379, adopted on November 10, 1975 by a vote of 72 to 35 (with 32 abstentions), that “determine[d] that Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination”. The resolution was passed with the support of the Soviet bloc and other then Soviet-aligned nations, in addition to the Arab and Islamic majority countries.

The determination that “Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination”, contained in the resolution, was only revoked in 1991 after strenuous effort by the US and other democratic nations.

As Abe Foxman of the ADL said, “anti-Zionism constitutes anti-Semitism if Zionism is the only nationalism being opposed.”

Also, in 2012 there were 22 UN General Assembly resolutions against Israel, but only four for the rest of the world combined.

So, just to be clear, in the eyes of the UN, a tiny democracy on a tiny strip of land is responsible for five times the horrors of war, starvation, torture, imprisonment, and terrorism of Russia, Syria, Iran, China, North Korea, and all the Islamic and African states combined!

The United Nations is now only a bastion for all the is bad in the world; greed, corruption and inherent anti-Semitism. Real hope can only come from within the community working with those that see through the facade of organisations and structures like the UN.

Even sport cannot escape Anti-Semitism

Competing in the World Masters Judo Tournament held this weekend in Rabat, Morocco, Israel’s Judo team was reportedly greeted by audience members with chants of “We will murder you” and “You’re not wanted here, go home.”

That was the icing on the anti-Semitic cake for the traveling Israeli Judo competitors. Upon arrival in Morocco, the Israeli team reportedly had their passports confiscated and were held in a small room without food, water or even chairs for nearly nine hours.

In addition, the Israeli flag was absent from the venue where the event took place, while the flags of all other participating countries were represented. And the Israeli flag was a no-show on the tournament’s official website, which also lacked any mention of Israel’s participation in the official Judo event.

The Israeli team’s inhumane detention at the airport was at first justified by the Moroccan authorities by citing what they claimed was the delegation’s alleged lack of visas. However, Israel’s Ynetnews website reported the Moroccans changed their story, saying a gun had been found in the luggage of one of the contestants.

The team, which spent much of their time lying uncomfortably on the floor, was only released from the holding room after Israel Judo Association chairman Moshe Ponti asked Marius Vizer, the president of the International Judo Federation’s executive committee, to intervene.

According to reports, Vizer threatened to cancel the entire competition unless the Israeli team was released. That dictate apparently worked. The airport authorities released the team and provided guards from the Moroccan king’s security unit.

Notably absent from the sports venue where the event took place was the Israeli flag. A Judo Federation board member reportedly asked that all flags be removed from the facility.

Spectators reportedly booed each Israeli athlete, and held Palestinian flags while hurling insults at the athletes.

Yarden Gerbi, an Israeli Judo participant, wrote on her Facebook page that “what happened in Morocco is a shame.”

“As an Israeli I feel ashamed to wait 8 hours at the airport, I feel ashamed to hear the crowed [sic] boo me and my teammates and want us to lose — and why? Because we are Israelis.”

Gerbi stressed that “We came for sports, pure sport, not politics. It’s an embarrassment for Morocco and the organization.”

Real Chutzpah!

Here at we are used to the chutzpah of claims some make when it comes to the Jewish people. Obviously, we are also distinctly aware that often it goes beyond chutzpah into downright Anti-Semitism. The latest news is that rare breed as it covers both.

First for the straightforward Anti-Semitism. Abdulla Ba Neeema, a Saudi Islamist preacher, has warned against social media such as WhatsApp, Twitter, and Facebook, because, he claims, Jews are using them to “poison and hearts and minds of the Muslims”.

The comments were posted by Ba Neema were posted to the internet on 3 rd May 2105, and were translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

“One day, I went to study two hours before the dawn prayer, and one minute before the first call for prayer, a song was played from a cell phone in the mosque. I began to cry,” he said. “I said to myself: the Jews have accomplished their goal. They managed to get these song celebrations into the Prophet’s mosque, using me, you and (all) the Muslims. That was their plan.”

The Jews, claimed Ba Neema, “are always looking for things that the Muslims love. Is it because they want to take them away from the (Muslims)? No. They want to put poison into things that the Muslims like.”

“WhatsApp is Jewish, Twitter is Jewish, Facebook is Jewish, Instagram is Jewish, and Snapshot is Jewish. All the social networks are Jewish,” he claimed. “All our information is in their hands…as a result of WhatsApp and Twitter, women’s honor has been violated, men have divorced women, and men and women have committed adultery.”

Now comes the chutzpah part, despite his criticism of social networks, MEMRI noted that Ba Neema runs very active Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts!

Another Iranian outrage

Hot on the heals of running a competition to find the ‘best’ Holocaust denial cartoon, Iran has now moved to ensure anyone born in Israel is banned from ever entering the country.

Iranian lawmakers are calling for a ban after a reporter from Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper visited the Islamic State earlier this month using her American passport.

While anyone with an Israeli passport is banned from entering Iran, reporter Orly Azouly, who serves as the Israeli newspaper’s correspondent in Washington, DC, obtained a visa from the Iranian Foreign Ministry and traveled to Iran as part of a delegation organized by the New York Times.

Azouly wrote several reports on her visit to Tehran, including on a synagogue in Isfahan and the Tomb of Queen Esther in Hamedan. Her trip sparked outrage in Iran, with a special parliamentary commission launched to investigate her visit and many accusing her of espionage.

While the investigation determined that Azoulay was not a spy, Mohammad Saleh Jokar, an Iranian lawmaker who was on the parliamentary commission, said that “we are asking for a ban on Israeli-born people from entering Iran in order to prevent such cases.”
