Algeria’s soccer team have pulled out of a friendly match with Ghana only because the latter has an Israeli head coach.
The Algerian team dropped out of the match to ensure that Avram Grant did not enter the country.
“The Algerian national team cancelled the friendly match with Ghana because it refused to host Ghana’s Israeli coach, Avraham (sic) Grant,” Algerian journalist Ayman Gada confirmed on Facebook.
Grant, the former Chelsea manager, has been in Ghana for the past two years. He had been the coach of the Israeli national team from 2002 to 2006.
Algeria last played Ghana in 2015’s Africa Cup of Nations, when Grant’s team won 1-0.
Algeria has long been a supporter of the Palestinian cause. The country used to have more than 100,000 Jews, but the vast majority of them left after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 and during the country’s bloody war of independence against France.
Algeria has a mixed attitude toward Jews. In 2014 the country announced it would reopen synagogues that had been closed since the 1990s. However in 2015 Algerian Islamists called for attacks on Jews and later that year a video surfaced of Algerian troops marching to chants about murdering Jews.
Algeria came fourth on a list of the world’s most anti-Semitic countries.
Italy’s football governing body has punished the country’s top team, Juventus, for its fans shouting anti-Semitic chants.
The punishment consists of an order to close a section of the club’s stadium in Turin. However, the sanction will only be enforced if there is a repeat of the behaviour. The Curva Sud section represents about a quarter of the stadium.
According to the chant’s chorus, for which Juventus has been punished in the past, people from Florence, where the team’s chief rival is based, are “not Italian” but “a bunch of Jews.”
AntiSemitismWatch has previously reported on other instances of anti-Semitism linked to Italian football. The most recent episode focused o Italian football journalist David Guetta. Described as a proud Florentine, with an obviously Italian Jewish name.
After a European cup match against Tottenham at White Hart Lane, Guetta took the tube back to central London and was recognised by a group of Fiorentina fans. Those fans then started to bombard him with anti-Semitic abuse. (Read the report here.)
Chelsea football fans in Paris have been caught up in an Antisemitic and racist abuse scandal.
Following on from similar allegations at the same Champion League fixture last year, Chelsea fans were witnessed on Tuesday evening to be chanting Antisemitic abuse outside the Frog and Rosbif pub. The pub is situated in the area of Paris where many Jewish people live.
The Chelsea fans were also seen forcing a black man off a Metro train while admitting ‘We’re racist’.
A Jewish football fan who was outside the Frog and Rosbif said: ‘The yid chants were very easy for us to understand, and it is clear what they meant by the hissing too.’
‘They were acting like it was funny, but there is nothing funny about the Holocaust. I’d seen it last year, and it happened all over again. The strange thing is that the police made no arrests.’
Chelsea Football Club say they will ban any fan found to have been involved.
